Transforming education in India with the National Education Policy as a guiding force
The Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme has selected 6,448 schools across 28 states and Union Territories for upgradation. With Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra having the highest number of selected schools, the scheme aims to align the education system with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and improve the quality of education for millions of children.
PM SHRI Scheme: An Ambitious Plan for India’s Education Sector
The Union Cabinet approved the Rs 27,360 crore PM SHRI scheme in September last year, with the goal of upgrading 14,500 schools in India over the next five years. The scheme is expected to benefit 1.8 million children and ensure that schools serve as model institutes, adhering to the guidelines of the NEP 2020.
Over 200,000 schools applied for the first round of upgradation under the PM SHRI scheme through an online portal launched by the Union Education Ministry in November 2022. The selection process for the first round was completed in a meeting held by officials last month.
The Selection Process
The selection process of PM SHRI schools was divided into three stages:
- States and union territories had to sign memorandums of understanding (MoUs) agreeing to implement NEP.
- Schools that were qualified to be selected under the PM SHRI scheme were recognized through the ministry’s Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) data.
- All the selected schools had to compete for the PM SHRI status.
According to an official from the Education Ministry, “The 6,448 schools have been selected based on the challenge method for fulfilling certain criteria for the first round. Only the schools from the above benchmark schools fulfilled the conditions.”
Criteria for Selection
To be selected as PM SHRI schools, urban institutions need to score a minimum of 70 per cent, while schools in rural areas must secure a minimum of 60 per cent. The selection of schools was based on parameters such as access and infrastructure; inclusive practices and gender equity; curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment, among others.
A Step Towards Educational Excellence
The PM SHRI scheme’s primary objective is to transform the Indian education landscape by upgrading schools to align with the NEP 2020. By focusing on the development of infrastructure, inclusive practices, and innovative pedagogical approaches, the scheme aims to create an educational environment that fosters excellence, equity, and holistic development for all students.
Challenges and Future Outlook
While the PM SHRI scheme represents a significant step towards improving education in India, it is essential to recognize and address the challenges that persist in the sector, including:
- Ensuring equal access to quality education for children in rural and remote areas
- Addressing the shortage of trained teachers and promoting professional development opportunities
- Strengthening the curriculum and assessment methods to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Enhancing collaboration between schools, higher education institutions, and industry partners for better employability and skill development
As the government continues to invest in education through initiatives like the PM SHRI scheme, the focus must remain on monitoring the effectiveness of these programs and making necessary adjustments to ensure their success. With a concerted effort from all stakeholders, India’s education system can be transformed to meet the aspirations of its youth and contribute to the nation’s progress.
